Ours will be a love story about scraped knees. 

From a stoop, the block boys cooed at my quick transition from grace to chaos. I looked at my knee, resembling hamburger meat, and  pouted about the yoga classes I’d miss. Yeelen retrieved my skateboard and I stood up, a nonchalant facade making up for the street cred seeping out of the new hole in my leggings.

At our apartment, I asked if he’d love me even if my knees were ugly. He cleaned my cuts and told me that the brown marks gave my flesh more character. He said, “I’ll love you no matter how much character your knees have.”

Yeelen and I have been spending our summer working on a feature length French American film. He’s covering continuity and acting as an assistant director, I’m the production coordinator/makeup artist. Yeelen’s father is the cinematographer and his mother is the Executive Producer, which, in all honesty, I found slightly intimidating at first.

We wakeup early, get home late, eat takeout for every meal, leave my apartment messy, and I haven’t done laundry for weeks. On the other hand, the insight I’ve gained is invaluable, all of the actors and crew members are sweethearts, each day we do something new, I’ve shed the anxiety of trying to impress my boyfriend’s parents, and I’m learning to speak French. Most of all, I’ve learned that there’s something incredibly rewarding about being part of a group that’s dedicated to the execution of artwork.
